Cymbidium insigne (commonly known as the Splendid Cymbidium, Notable Cymbidium, or เอื้องสำเภางาม / สำเภางาม in Thai) is a large, highly prized terrestrial orchid species native to high-altitude regions of Thailand, Vietnam, and Southern China (Hainan and Yunnan). Discovered around 1904, this species played a revolutionary role in orchid breeding and serves as the genetic foundation for many modern, upright-flowered Cymbidium hybrids. Key Characteristics
  • The Blooms: It features long, sturdy, erect flower spikes reaching up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) in height. Each spike can carry numerous tightly clustered flowers, measuring about 7 to 9 cm across. The flowers range from pale pink to white, highlighted by a striking pink or red lip patterned with deep purple veins.
  • Growth Habit: It grows as a terrestrial or lithophytic plant (on ground or sandstone rocks) in nature. It features ovoid pseudobulbs about the size of an orange and narrow, grass-like leaves up to a meter long.
  • Natural Habitat: Found in open montane cloud forests, pine woodlands, and grassy slopes at cool elevations between 1,000 and 2,600 meters.
Care Requirements
Because it originates from highland environments, Cymbidium insigne thrives on cool temperatures and dynamic day-to-night temperature drops to initiate flowering
  • Temperature: It prefers a cool to cold environment. Ideal daytime temperatures are 18°C–25°C, with a drop to 10°C–15°C at night. It can tolerate brief drops down to 3°C–8°C in winter.
  • Light: Bright, filtered morning sunlight is optimal. Provide shaded protection from intense, direct afternoon sun to avoid leaf scorch.
  • Watering: Keep the medium consistently moist but not soggy during active spring and summer growth. Reduce watering in the winter dormancy period, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Humidity & Air: Requires moderate to high humidity (50%–70%) combined with excellent, continuous air circulation.
  • Potting Medium: Needs an open, coarse, well-draining terrestrial orchid mix. A blend of fine orchid bark, perlite, charcoal, and pumice works well to maintain moisture without suffocating the roots
